Why do greedy & corrupt people go into politics?

It's where the money is.

This is true of governors, senators, Brazilian mayors, and their hangers-on. As a bonus observation, a new paper shows why the quality of politicians goes down as budgets and corruption increase.

In other words, Mike Easley's friends and family did not have to become better at what they did because they were inside a system where quality mattered less than connections.
