Latest dispatches from the political trail

• Elizabeth Dole and Kay Hagan take the stage Saturday morning in Atlantic Beach for a candidate forum in front of the NC Bar Association. Then, Beverly Perdue and Pat McCrory will do the same.

• In New Bern Friday for the start of the Democratic convention, Perdue stops by the groundbreaking of the new history education center at Tryon Palace, a project she helped to get funded by the state. At the convention, festivities begin with a fundraiser closed to the press. Jerry Meek expects 1,200 in attendance. Republicans also hold a fundraiser, featuring President Bush and to benefit the McCrory campaign. The presidential visit brings crowds & traffic, plus presumably cash.

• Hagan makes a campaign stop in Wilmington to highlight high gas prices. At a similar appearance in Rocky Mount, Hagan draws criticism about her energy policies. While many Republicans in the Carolinas delegation in Congress now support offshore drilling, Dole does not.
